Well I never did, the Nazi Youth Pope has resigned, the first one to do it since Pope Gregory XII in 1415. I suppose we should all take this as a sign, after all, how many people have lived through a Pope being murdered, Pope John Paul, and one resigning.
So, we have to ask ourselves, why has dear old Ratty decided to go? Let’s look at the official version
“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.
However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to steer the ship of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.
For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.”
Ok, fair enough, but after a life in the church of Rome, you would have thought that he would have realised before he took the gig, that it was for life. He is after all the living embodiment of St Peter, who carried on until he was beheaded, no that’s not right, crucified upside-down, is that right? Of course it’s not right, it was made up by third century Father Origen, who changed the original story made up by Pope Anicetus. The truth is the Bible doesn’t mention his death at all.
Anyway, back to Ratty, he was number two to Pope John Paul II, a man so obviously incapable at the end it was painful to watch, but did he give up, no, so why is Ratzinger going?
There has to be a reason much deeper than age. Has someone uncovered some dark secrets? I’m sure the AM will be buzzing over the next few days and wait with baited breath.
